What is the origin of the word skol?

According to Looper and Sports Illustrated, the word skol comes from the Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian word skål. A skål was a bowl that was usually filled with beer and shared among a group of friends. Therefore, this became a way of saying “Cheers!” You may hear this word all over Scandinavia in places like Iceland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden.

Some believe that this word has darker origins. Historians postulate that Viking warriors, after vanquishing a tribe or army, would decapitate the king or leader and drink from his skull – in the early languages in Scandinavia or another Old Norse Language, spelled skoll – as a sign of respect for the fallen opponent. This interpretation is likely inaccurate and based on  false portrayals of Vikings as barbarians. The Vikings were and continue to be stereotyped in the same way pirates often are, with many of the stories that are told amplify the most brutal aspects.

Overall, the word skol means cheers and is used as a salute to good health. This was originally used as a war chant by Vikings after they vanquished the leader of the tribe. This word comes from the Old Norse skal and the Danish skaal bowl
