What is a comma?

According to Grammar Book, a comma can be used in a plethora of different ways. You can use a comma any time you combine two independent clauses, but not between an independent clause and a dependent clause. Use a comma when you are showing a big contrast between two things, when a dependent clause is followed by an independent clause or complete thought, when a sentence starts with a word or phrase that introduces it, in the middle of sentence to separate out information that provides extra details (in which the final comma is called the appositive comma), when listing three or more things, when you have more than one adjective in a row describing something, for introductory words and introductory phrases, for phrases at the end of a sentence, and more. The general rule is that a comma, like a semicolon, is a pause in dialogue. However, you shouldn’t put a comma between two nouns in a compound subject or compound object. The comma before the last item in a list is called the Oxford Comma.

This is one of many punctuation marks in English grammar like a question mark or colons. Commas are used to eliminate confusion, before quotation marks, to form a compound sentence, to connect parts of a sentence or a clause to the rest of the sentence and more. It is unnecessary to use a comma after short introductory prepositional phrases. Commas can also be used in the middle of a sentence to introduce additional information or nonessential information, before direct quotations or a quote, after a day of the month or day of the week, for a place name, after interjections and more. The use of the comma can seem tricky, but is crucial to the meaning of a sentence as are other things for complete sentences.
