According to Film Daily and Fandom, the term unus annus is Latin for one year. This is also the name of a YouTube channel that was created by CrankGameplays and Markiplier – real names Ethan Nestor-Darling and Mark Fischbach. These YouTubers created the channel on November 13, 2019. On the channel, they uploaded one episode or video per day but steered clear of the gaming videos and content they were known for. This upload was much more varied in content with the performers doing a variety of activities in comparison to their normal gaming videos. Ethan was meant to represent the Unus persona, while Mark represented the Annus.
The channel was only meant to survive for one year. This was meant to be a once in a life time experience and for the channel to be deleted after one year of creating content, hence it being named one year. This was part of Mark’s idea of not having to immortalize everything on the internet, and that treasured experiences are unique and fleeting. These also tie into Unus Annus’ imagery of frailty and death. The channel frequently used the tagline memento mori, which means “remember that you have to die” in Latin. The channel had 4.58 million subscribers and 867 million views before the channel was officially deleted. While there are many archives available online, the channel owners try to get them taken down. They encourage people to go create memories in their own unique experiences. Many people believe this may have been an experiment in pushing the limits of the YouTube Community Guidelines as the end-goal, testing copyright takedowns. They even stated in a live stream their description box of a goodbye.
After the year run, they stated that the broadcast will end. Unus Annus’ merchandise and Unus Annus’ social accounts were all deleted and replaced with a black screen. The channel’s name and tagline tie into Unus Annus’ symbolic imagery. On the last day after an entire year, the channels and social accounts’ profile pictures were all replaced with solid black images and banners. A list of the video titles is below,

Overall, the Latin phrase unus annus means one year. The Youtube channel Unus Annus was run by duo Markiplier and CrankGameplays (the creators’ main channels). The view range is wide and the video descriptions are as well, but this was a real life smash hit success. Unus Annus content exemplifies the characters’ unique personalities in every new video especially in comparison to their gaming channels. The channel’s metaphor was about the fleeting nature of existence, the purpose of our final year, and the meaning of the limited time we have. The channel’s termination occurred last November.
