What does the term FUPA mean?

According to Define Dictionary, Mama Mia, and Independent UK, the acronym FUPA stands for fat upper pelvic area or fat upper public area. Some people also call this a fatty upper pubic area, fat upper penile area, and more derogatory terms such as huge upper pussy area, giant upper pussy area, or larger upper pussy area (GUPA, HUPA, gunt). This refers to an excessive amount of fat or roll of flab in the lower abdomen or mons pubis – in women, between the stomach and the vagina. Some people get a little FUPA or little mommy pouch after giving birth or after pregnancy.  This is a common condition in which the loose layer of fat is left around after rapid weight loss. People might choose to get a tummy tuck to get rid of it if it is simply excess skin left behind after giving birth or excess baby weight in the lower abdomen region, while others who may struggle with weight gain or obesity may work out to get a six-pack, build muscles and eliminate their FUPA. 

These patches of fatty waste are a phenomenon that can also have some common misinterpretations, such as pubic hair or large genetalia or genitals. The size of your FUPA in the abdominal area of the body may change as weight changes, or it might be permanent after your first child or simply depending on how your organs exist within your body. Plastic surgeons offer variations on invasive procedures to remove the FUPA. These usually involve a slit of the public area. Some FUPAs are caused by genetics, others by weight changes, and others by pregnancy. Some can be removed by a healthy diet and exercises, while others can only be removed by surgery. It should not matter if you are an individual of larger stature or someone who wants to get back to their original body image, we should all accept our bodies for how they are in the present. They keep us moving, living, and breathing – FUPA or not.

The appeared on the cover of American Vogue photographed by 23-year-old photographer Tyler Mitchell. She revealed that not only did her stomach stick around after giving birth, but her arms, shoulders, breasts and thighs are fuller and she has fuller curves all over her body. She is in no rush to get rid of her FUPA, but says she will work her ass off in beast zone when the time comes. FUPA is sometimes confused with FUBU, which is an overpriced brand of clothes worn by suburban caucasian adolescent males.

There are many different types of fat reduction surgeries that a person could explore if they are looking to get rid of fat on their bodies according to Plastic Surgery.  There are nonsurgical and minimally invasive options for fat reduction that use heat or cooling or an injected medication to reduce fat cells. These can be a great option for patients unwilling or unable to undergo surgery. However, these are not as effective as a replacement for liposuction. Other nonsurgical fat reduction options use a variety of different modalities, including radio frequency, ultrasound, vacuum massage, infrared light, and injectable medication. These include things like cryolipolysis (e.g., CoolSculpting),  radiofrequency lipolysis (e.g., Vanquish), injection lipolysis (e.g., Kybella), and laser lipolysis (e.g., SculpSure).

There are also different types of more invasive surgeries that can be more effective, but have their pros and cons. According to Cosmos Clinic, invasive procedures involve general anaesthesia as well as making large cuts and incisions in the area to be treated. These could refer to any of the below types of surgeries: 

  •  Lower body lift
  •  Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
  •  Laser treatment of leg veins
  •  Liposuction (lipoplasty)
  •  Breast augmentation or enlargement (augmentation mammoplasty)
  •  Eyelid lift (blepharoplasty)
  •  Lip augmentation
  •  Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
  •  Chin, cheek, or jaw reshaping (facial implants or soft tissue augmentation)
  •  Plumping, or collagen or fat injections (facial rejuvenation)
  •  Vaginal rejuvenation
  •  Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)
  •  Forehead lift
  •  Facelift (rhytidectomy)
  •  Laser skin resurfacing
  •  Breast implant removals
  •  Thigh lift
  •  Breast lift  (mastopexy) with or without the placement of an implant
  •  Upper arm lift (brachioplasty)
  •  Hair replacement or transplantation
  •  Buttock lift

While these are more effective faster, they can also be very painful and stressful, have a considerably longer recovery period in comparison to less invasive procedures, and have a higher risk of complications, particularly the possibility of developing an infection of the treated area. Minimally invasive surgeries, while potentially being less effective or requiring more treatment, have several advantages such as having minimal discomfort or pain, having faster recovery times, causing minimal scarring or bruising, and carrying a lower risk of infection. Patients can resume their normal activities and return to life much faster by choosing a minimally invasive procedure.

People also do not have to choose to have surgery. While some FUPAs can only be removed with surgery due to excess skin or herniation, many can be significantly reduced with diet and exercise. While no one fan spot reduce fat and fat reduction happs all over the body, by building muscle in the abdominal area and reducing fat all over the body via diet and exercise, the size of the FUPA can significantly reduce.
