What is the origin of the word boujee?
The terms nboujee and bougie are both abbreviations from the French word bourgeoisie or bourgeois, meaning middle class, working class or proletariat. However, by the late 18th century, the term bourgeoisie began to be used to disparage someone as materialistic, conventional, and complacent. In the 1970s and 1980s, the term was shortened to bougie which mocked things as consumeristic, pretentious, and suburban. In the 2010s, the trio Migos, a hip-hop trio released the song “Bad and Boujee” which gives us the new spelling of boujee. The song has increased its popularity as has its usage on Twitter.
